About the artist

I have been hand painting tiles for many years now. All the bespoke designs are original and unique paintings created to a specific brief for each client.

I originally studied illustration and have an honours degree in Graphic Design. I started painting onto tiles after a spell working for Fired Earth. I realised there was a gap in the market for people who could find a suitable tile for their kitchen or bathroom but not an image that they liked and so started painting tiles to order.

Since then I have expanded the range with a series of designs available to order immediately as well as a collection of hand-decorated bone china mugs and jugs.

About the tiles

I use an on-glaze method of painting using special ceramic paints applied onto tiles that have already been glazed. All my base tiles are made for me in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK and hand-finished using traditional techniques.

The process starts with an initial sketch of the design for approval. This is usually to scale to make sure that the image sits comfortably in the space available.

Once the design has been approved I start painting, building the image up over five or six layers with a firing in between each layer. This allows subtle tones and detail to be added.

As each layer is completed the tiles are fired to 800°C, this takes about fourteen hours and bonds the paints to the glaze creating a completely permanent image.

The painting process will take several days depending on the size and complexity of the design but the end result is a unique piece of artwork.
